INTRO

Paul Richards, CRO at PTZ Optics, shares his most advanced live production as a StreamGeek. He aimed to create an video production setup capable of managing multiple 4K cameras, integrating seamlessly with various AV equipment, and ensuring low-latency, high-quality video transmission.

One of the goals was to accommodate multiple PTZ camera operators who can keep up with fast-paced sports, along with ISO-recording all content in 4K @ 60fps to provide the best quality video recordings.

THE CHALLENGE

While live streaming and video production of ice hockey games aren’t new, integrating innovative tools like wireless instant-replay tablets for coaches was a groundbreaking addition. The coaches were beyond impressed, and to enhance their experience, Paul created highlight reels for the athletes. This new approach highlights how workflows in sports broadcasting can evolve significantly with the right technology.

Paul’s vision extended beyond just enabling the coaches. He set out to design an advanced live streaming workflow capable of:

Managing multiple 4K cameras.Empowering multiple PTZ camera operatorsSeamlessly integrating with AV equipment.Delivering low-latency, high-quality video streams. The key to this transformation was finding a network solution robust enough to handle the demands of modern live sports production.

THE SOLUTION

Sports broadcasting is an exciting and growing market. This week, the StreamGeeks team from PTZOptics brought together an advanced setup featuring:

  • PTZOptics 4K60 cameras.
  • PTZOptics SuperJoy NDI-enabled Controllers
  • vMix live production software.
  • ATOMOS recorders for professional-grade video capture.
  • NETGEAR AV Line M4250 switches with multicast to enable seamless connectivity.
  • YoloLiv YoloBox for simplified workflows.
  • SkyCoach sideline instant replay system for real-time video playback.

To meet the demands of this workflow, Paul selected NETGEAR’s AV Line M4250 switches, which are purpose-built for professional AVoIP applications.

These switches offered:

Optimized Performance

Pre-configured settings tailored for AVoIP ensured smooth and reliable video streaming, handling the complexity of multiple devices and sources.

Scalability

With flexible configurations, the network easily accommodated future expansions, ensuring the setup could grow as needed.

User-Friendly Management

The intuitive interface allowed quick adjustments and efficient network oversight, streamlining operations during live events.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WORKFLOW

While live streaming sports isn’t new, Paul and his team introduced innovative elements to elevate the experience:

4K60 Recording for Post-Production: Using the ATOMOS Shogun Ultra, the team captured high-quality footage ideal for detailed editing.

Multi-Camera Production: The setup resembled professional TV productions, moving beyond the common panoramic camera approach.

Sideline Instant Replay: Coaches used tablets to review instant replays, offering a new level of engagement and analysis.

Multicast Networking: Each camera served multiple systems, enabled by the NETGEAR M4250 switches. For instance:

  • One vMix system recorded and streamed each PTZOptics Move 4K NDI camera source.
  • Another vMix system recorded all NDI sources in a Quad-View Split, consolidating multiple camera feeds into a single video for coaches to review later on a 4K display.
  • A YoloBox recorded video directly onto an SD card for coaches to take home.
  • The SkyCoach system delivered instant replays over WiFi to coaching tablets.

Additionally, two PTZOptics SuperJoy controllers facilitated seamless camera operation, enhancing the experience for camera operators.
