Industries have moved toward more frequent training and testing. You may never forget how to ride a bike, but your balancing skills while riding without hands certainly atrophy when you don&#8217;t use them.<\/p>\n<p>The security industry has spent twenty years trying to scare small businesses into better habits, and that hasn&#8217;t worked particularly well. Breach statistics don&#8217;t reflect a shortage of alarm\u2026we all see it. But what they do reflect is a shortage of usable knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Fear makes people freeze or delegate. Knowledge drives recognition. They are different responses, so when a phishing email lands in your inbox on a Friday afternoon with an urgent call to action, we know what not to click and how to respond rather than walking into a compromised network on Monday morning.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n        <div id=\"topic2\" class=\"skip-item\">\n                        <h2>What research actually shows<\/h2>\n                <p>For most small businesses that suffered a breach, the problem wasn&#8217;t missing software. It was missing context. Someone clicked something they shouldn&#8217;t have because nothing in their experience had taught them what to look for. Informed teams pause before they click. They ask whether a request feels right before acting, and they notice when something is slightly off. This isn\u2019t advanced security skills. It&#8217;s basic pattern recognition.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason most pilots spend more time in simulators than in the cockpit during training. Knowing what a problem looks like before it happens changes how fast you respond when it does, and cybersecurity works the same way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/business\/resources\/reports\/dbir\/\">The Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report<\/a> consistently finds that the human element plays a major role in breaches. That finding is often cited as evidence of human failure, but I see it as evidence of a training gap. People who know what a business email compromise attempt looks like are more likely to recognize one. People who have never encountered one, in training or in the wild, may not know what to look for.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n        <div id=\"topic3\" class=\"skip-item\">\n                        <h2>The myth that keeps businesses exposed<\/h2>\n                <p>The most persistent misconception in small business security isn&#8217;t about technology. It&#8217;s about relevance. Many small business owners believe they&#8217;re too small to be a meaningful target. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netgear.com\/hub\/business\/enterprise-it\/small-business-cybersecurity-risks\/\">The data says otherwise as I explored in my previous post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Attackers use automated scans that find and exploit vulnerabilities and exploit them regardless of company size. An unpatched router at a 15-person accounting firm can be every bit as useful to them as one at a regional bank. An unlocked door doesn\u2019t have to lead to a vault to be worth opening. Access itself has value, especially when it can disrupt something essential to your business.<\/p>\n<p>Small businesses are also attractive targets for a more specific reason: they often have access to larger organizations. A vendor, supplier, or service provider with credentials for a larger company\u2019s systems may be worth compromising, even if the smaller business holds little valuable data of its own. The 2013 Target breach began with credentials stolen from an HVAC contractor that had access to Target\u2019s network. Understanding that your exposure extends beyond what you own changes how you think about third-party access, vendor relationships, and the permissions you grant.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n        <div id=\"topic4\" class=\"skip-item\">\n                        <h2>What we're covering this month<\/h2>\n                <p>This is the first of four posts we&#8217;re publishing throughout October. This isn\u2019t a test. It\u2019s a diagnostic that tells you where to focus next.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n    <\/div>\n        <div id=\"topic5\" class=\"skip-item\">\n                        <h2>What informed actually looks like<\/h2>\n                <p>An informed business owner knows that a breach doesn\u2019t require a sophisticated exploit. A stolen credential, an unpatched device, or a compromised vendor can be enough. They know that vendors and third-party tools are part of their exposure whether they think about them or not. They know a backup is only useful if it works when needed. They also know that security tools provide a backstop, helping contain the damage when something gets through.<\/p>\n<p>MSPs and VARs know that MFA on email alone isn&#8217;t enough, that network firmware needs to be updated just like any other software, and that regular access reviews can uncover risks no product can see. Those reviews require context that many small businesses never receive because the industry has focused more on selling security products than helping customers understand their exposure.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n        <div id=\"topic6\" class=\"skip-item\">\n                        <h2>Visibility is the other half<\/h2>\n                <p>Knowing what to look for is one part of informed security. Having the visibility to act on that knowledge is the other.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing what&#8217;s on your network, what&#8217;s leaving it, and who has access to what turns awareness into action. Many small businesses lack a complete view, but gaining that visibility does not have to be expensive or technically complex. It does require building a habit of looking.
