\"\"In this firmware upgrade, you can now \u201cdaisy chain<\/a>\u201d your Orbi satellites together, to extend the coverage of your Orbi WiFi System range. This new feature allows a satellite to dynamically pick the best way to connect to its router, either directly (as is currently supported in what\u2019s known as a Star Topology), or through another satellite. \u00a0Daisy chain is a term in networking to describe a type of mesh topology, or how your Orbi router talks to its Orbi satellite(s).<\/p>\n

According to the Census Bureau link<\/a>, the median house size in the US is 2,600 square feet. A typical Orbi kit easily covers 80% of newly constructed homes in the U.S. However, to address the remaining homes, such as those with a long floor plan or a multi-story unit – where the Internet connection is at one side of the house and coverage is needed on the other side – NETGEAR took the step of facilitating this networking topology.\u00a0 Each Orbi satellite dynamically picks the best path based on the current WiFi channel conditions. \u00a0In most instances, to minimise latency and maximise airtime utilisation, the satellite will select a direct connection. \u00a0However, it now has the option to connect through an intermediary Orbi satellite.<\/p>\n
